WASHINGTON, July 3, 2013 — Wimbledon this year doomed the hopes of some tennis’ best players. The latest to slide towards the exit is Spain’s David Ferrer, who was taken down by Argentinian Juan Martin del Porto 6-2, 6-4, 7-6, who himself slipped and fell early in the match, injuring his left knee. At one point, there was some doubt whether he would continue. Ferrer, who was hurt in an earlier match, was not able to take advantage of del Porto’s injuries, and found himself on the receiving end of ferocious returns.
